Meet Joe Black (1998)
Martin Brest |
脚本 | Ron Osborn、Jeff Reno |
主演 | Brad Pitt (Joe Black & Young Man)、Anthony Hopkins (William Parrish)、Claire Forlani (Susan Parrish) |
No one can die - while he loves! |
PARRISH: You love Drew? Do you love Drew? | |
SUSAN: You mean like you loved Mom? | |
PARRISH: Forget about me and Mom. Are you gonna marry him? |
SUSAN: Probably. | |
PARRISH: Listen, I'm crazy about the guy. He's smart, he's aggressive, he could carry Parrish Communications into the 21st century and me along with it. |
SUSAN: Um-hum. So what's wrong with that? |
PARRISH: That's for me. I'm talking about you. It's not what you say about Drew, but what you don't say. | |
SUSAN: Maybe you're not listening. | |
PARRISH: Oh yes, I am. There's not an ounce of excitement, not a whisper of a thrill. This relationship has all the passion of a pair of titmice. I want you to get swept away. I want you to levitate. I want you to sing with rapture and dance like a dervish. |
SUSAN: Oh, that's all? |
PARRISH: Yeah. Be deliriously happy, or at least leave yourself open to be. |
SUSAN: Okay. 'Be deliriously happy'. I shall do my upmost. | |
PARRISH: I know it's a cornball thing, but love is passion, obsession, someone you can't live without. I say fall head over heels. Find someone you can love like crazy and who'll love you the same way back. And how do you find him? Well, forget your head and listen to your heart. I'm not hearing any heart. Because the truth is, honey, there is no sense living your life without this. To make the journey and not fall deeply in love, well, you haven't lived a life at all. But you have to try. Because if you haven't tried, you haven't lived. |
SUSAN: Bravo! | |
PARRISH: Oh, you're tough. | |
SUSAN: I'm sorry. Okay, give it to me again. But the short version this time. |
PARRISH: Okay. Stay open. Who knows? Lightning could strike. |
titmice(titmouse:シジュウカラの複数形)。levitate(空中浮揚する)。rapture(有頂天)。dervish(ダルウィーシュ、恍惚として踊る人)。deliriously(狂喜して)。cornball(甘くて古臭いもの、元はキャラメルコーンのこと)。head over heels(まっさかさまに、首ったけで)。lightning(稲妻、電光、思いがけない幸運)。 |

YOUNG MAN: It's kind of a pro bono job. | |
SUSAN: Pro bono? Meaning doing good. |
YOUNG MAN: That's me. |
SUSAN: Can you be doing good all your life? |
YOUNG MAN: I know what you're saying. It doesn't pay so well, but I like it. Eventually it will depend on the woman I marry, I think. Maybe she'd want lots of kids, a bigger house, a better car, college doesn't come cheap, you know. I don't know. |
SUSAN: You'd give up what you want for the woman you marry? | |
YOUNG MAN: Yeah, you know, I would. Gladly. Because you make your choices, you know. So you and I, if we were married... No, for example, okay? If you and I were married, I'd want to give you what you need, that's all. I'm talking about taking care of each other the best you can. What's wrong with taking care of a woman? She takes care of you. |
SUSAN: You'll have a hard time finding a woman like that these days. | |
YOUNG MAN: Shoot, you think so? I don't know. Lightning could strike. |
最後のLightning could strike. |

DREW: But given our needs, given the absolute necessity for growth, given the future, the truth is joining John Bontecou is every bit as certain as Death and Taxes. |
JOE: Death and Taxes? | |
DREW: Yes. | |
JOE: Death and Taxes? | |
DREW: Yes. | |
JOE: What an odd pairing. | |
DREW: It's just a saying, Mr. Black. | |
JOE: Hum. By whom? | |
DREW: It doesn't matter. | |
JOE: Then why did you bring it up? |
DREW: You're not familiar with the phrase, "In this world nothing is certain but Death and Taxes"? |
JOE: I am now. |
DREW: Glad I could be of some help. I keep regular office hours, so if there's any further information you might need on sayings, common phrases, manners of speaking, my door is wide open. The tea I can provide, perhaps even the milk. Low fat.
every bit(どこから見ても、完全に)。odd(奇妙な、変な)。 |
Death and Taxes

QUINCE: Come on, have a drink. You look like you need one as bad as me. |
JOE: I do? Quince, I'm myself a little confused. | |
QUINCE: Confused, huh? About what? |
JOE: Love. | |
QUINCE: Love? Oh man, I've got problems of my own. |
JOE: You love Allison, don't you? |
QUINCE: Yes, I do. |
JOE: How did you meet? | |
QUINCE: Well, I was this world-class loser and she was this happy, little rich girl, and for some reason she took me in. |
JOE: But Allison loves you? (Quince nods.) How do you know? |
QUINCE: Because she knows the worst thing about me and it's okay. | |
JOE: What is it? |
QUINCE: No, it's not one thing, it's just an idea, Joe, it's just, um... It's like you know each other's secrets, the deepest, darkest secrets. | |
JOE: The deepest, darkest secrets? | |
QUINCE: Yeah, and then you are free. | |
JOE: Free? | |
QUINCE: You're free. You're free to love each other. Completely. Totally. There's no fear. Because there's nothing you don't know about each other, and it's just, it's okay.
http://members.jcom.home.ne.jp/enjoy_english/meetjoeblack.html |
